Monday the 19th of November 2018

Today was the day of the ‘Warm-up Christmas Gig’, Chris wasn’t in as he was ill, this led to a different pace to work but still efficient as ever.

We started off the day with going through our blogs and bringing them up to Chris’ standard, Jason checked through everybody’s blog whilst giving others a hand with their theory also. I sat down checked through and organised everything so it is ten times easier for the board to check and for Chris also, all I need to do now is to sort out my rehearsal diaries and answer the questions properly. Now that I have properly caught up on my regular sleeping pattern (sort of), I am now starting to pick up my slack and to get along with college life.

After this we had the warm up gig, I don’t want to go into too much detail but it went well for everybody with a few minor slip ups. Our singer and guitarist in a way messed up our final song, I was confused so me and tom kept driving the song but they kept bringing it back which was embarrassing none the least.

The videos can be found on the Fareham Music Youtube channel which consists of a playlist of each and every band from level two to the level three first years!

After that we ended the day early yet again as Jason doesn’t work in the afternoons and Chris was ill, so everyone decided to take off. I wanted to rehearse but they all wanted to go home which was great, so we agreed to have a double rehearsal tomorrow hopefully.

Wednesday the 7th of November 2018

Nothing much happened today, as per usual, I spent my morning in the library going through my rehearsal diaries trying to correct myself for the third consecutive time in the last 3 weeks.

When I finally went over to music it was time for my guitar lesson with Dan, so I warmed up and tuned up my guitar

Tuesday the 6th of November 2018

First off we had rehearsal whilst our singer went to go warm up, as a band we warmed up then decided to run through Just a Girl and once we got it right a couple of times we called our singer in to get her part within place which only took a few takes, we now have to work on perfecting the ending and how smooth we look whilst playing it.

Jason came in nearing the second half of the session and helped us out with ‘Ironic’ which was great, we went through the arrangement as a band as far as we felt comfortable with the quality we were playing at. Jason helped me figure out the bass part as I had trouble the night before trying to learn it with my wrist and fingers playing up which isn’t great.

Afterwards we packed up and had a break, then we had concert and stage production with Dan which was interesting none the least. I proceeded to ask a fair few questions whilst the rest of the class chatted amongst themselves really which was very disrespectful towards Dan considering how he put time and effort in to making it a convenient thing for us.

It consisted of going through a workbook listing everything we would need as a band to go out to play a gig and or any venue in fact, we had to work out the outage all our equipment would need so we wouldn’t blow a fuse and how we would distribute power on stage which is crucial. Next week we are going to be assessed on how we set up the stage with Dan’s guidance and so forth which I am looking forward to.

In theory with Jason I did my rehearsal diaries again because I clearly lack the capability to answer questions correctly, I spent all session doing this because I have finished my Stylistic Analysis I need it to be checked and to see if I can add anything else to boost my mark and or change anywhere I may have went wrong.

After lunch we had rehearsal but our singer went home ill so we had to go out on a limb again and go through our songs as a band which we never enjoy fully, but I know that it will maker tighter as a unit. We’ve now decided on ‘Just A Girl’ by No Doubt, ‘Black Velvet’ by Alannah Myles and ‘Ironic’ by Alanis Morissette with the help from Chris and we have kept ‘I Want You Back’ by The Jackson 5 which is our go to. I need learn Black Velvet and Ironic and get my parts down in both to keep some form of efficiency within rehearsal.

Tutor was alright apart from it feeling like I was within a Guillotine with people staring at me when Chris went on about our singers attendance and how I felt about it so I kept quiet as I don’t want to seem stuck up even though I am really..

Monday the 5th of November 2018

This morning we came in early to record a song to go along with our promotional video that is being filmed by a media student who was selected to with us.

As we haven’t put together an original yet because we are still trying to finish our set which should be done by this week, so we have chosen to cover ‘I Want You Back’ as it is where we all feel comfortable whilst playing without a singer.

We set our selves up within 3 separate rooms, I was in the studio with Dan playing Bass, our Guitarist was in the room to the left of us and then our Drummer was in the room in front of us. This way made it easier for us to be recorded on separate tracks and it ensured nothing would leak onto another track if we were all in the same room also, we took a handful of takes all at different tempos to try find out what best fit.

It started at the original tempo which was 98bpm then brought it up to around about 100-105bpm which was a comfortable speed for us all to play at, it took me a handful of takes to figure out how to play the bass-line quicker than usual without cutting notes which I managed in the end.

When we were finished I listened back to our take whilst the other two packed up, it was a great take for the time we were given, all that is left is for our vocalist to lay her track down on it then we only have the video left to do when our person gets in contact.

After this our first lesson was theory with Chris, today we went over how to get to the venue for our Christmas concert and the requirements we need to play there which was useful information. We then had a rehearsal session we went through ‘Just a Girl’ by No Doubt and we talked about what else we could do to improve and add to our set, considering are vocalist went home ill early on what didn’t know what to do and left it at that for the session knowing we got the structure nailed without her.

During D.I.S. I helped out with rehearsal diaries considering I have done all mine even though every time I get them checked something seems to be wrong which is excellent, after that we had a rehearsal session but about twenty minutes in we had only went through our song once so I decided to get Chris to help us choose some new songs.

We’ve got rid of all our other ideas and kept ‘Just a Girl’ and ‘I Want You Back’  for now Chris has mentioned we listen to and do ‘Ironic’ by Alanis Morissette for tomorrow when our singer is in and on that note we ended the day.

Wednesday the 31st of October 2018

To start off the day we had rehearsal, we went through our two new songs, I picked them up pretty quickly considering I didn’t get much rest yesterday.

We went through them a couple of times then talked about how we are going to conduct our selves during our upcoming gigs which went alright, we also mentioned about doing a tune by Queen considering the sudden popularity of the hit Biopic ‘Bohemian Rhapsody’.

We know as a band that we all have to work on our parts still to get them to our high standards, when I get home I will work on my bass part until it drives me insane. After that we had our instrumental lessons, well I did at least with Dan, we went over our grade 6 guitar scales and arpeggios, which is always good wholesome fun, next week we are going over the chords and then from that point on its about repetition and hardcore learning.

Lunch was fun I had the same epic meal as yesterday, this ensures me that I am always engaged within lessons and ready to destroy chord progressions, after lunch we had theory fun times with Chris.

I enjoy Aural Perception as I tend to pick up everything first time, but I tend to keep what I get to myself so I don’t seem like a big Nerd which is always epic. Chris’ aim was to go through a powerpoint by the end of class but we only managed to get through one slide properly then get on to the next one, so that will definitely be a months project right there. Throughout the lesson Jason popped in and out which kept me sane considering how disengaged I can become on a Wednesday.

After the lesson we were given the tickets to sell for our Christmas Concert which Jason painfully numbered individual which made me chuckle, I should have the money for mine by Friday, I ended up the day talking to Jason to wind down which helps me out a lot.

After that I walked home with what I need to improve upon for next week on my mind!

Tuesday the 30th of October 2018

This morning instead of rehearsal we had Peer and Self Evaluation with Jason which I enjoyed about fifty percent and for the other I felt fairly exposed. Before our band went up we watched two other bands perform a handful of songs then gave them both some pointers on where to improve and how to do so, most people found this process funny and not a serious matter which Jason found rude and so did I.

I didn’t want to say anything to the other bands that was brutally honest so I tried just laying back until it was our turn to go up, Jason eventually found me in the back and asked me what Faith could improve on as a singer and during in her performance which I did accordingly. When it was our turn to go up our singer wasn’t really feeling like singing any of the songs we have been doing up until this point of time, so we went through ‘I Want You Back’ by The Jackson 5 which was mediocre at best when she sung but she eventually forgot or just didn’t feel like going through the song when hit a certain point which was embarrassing, so I started to get the audiences attention towards me until she came back in which didn’t happen.

Then we brought our old male vocalist back on stage and then all of a sudden she felt a lot more comfortable when singing the song, so went through the song from the beginning which I thought went well as I didn’t miss any notes or play anything wrong and everyone’s parts sounded pretty tight to me so I was expecting a subtle roast. I was trying to interact with the audience but this time my wing didn’t want to acknowledge me so I ended up walking up to the front of stage for no reaction apart from Chris watching me and Tom because the groove is where it’s at for him. Whilst performing I tend to stick to what I’m playing so it’s note perfect and I don’t end up slipping on my own mistakes, and when I think I can engage with others and feel safe with playing I’ll engage with Tom mainly or jump about with the guitarist.

But when we came off I was pretty confused and agitated for the rest of the day as we were told to keep it cool as the attention should be on the lead singer but we should still interact with the crowd but not take the attention off of her so, I am going to be on the fence whilst performing next which I think will be at our warm-gig.

Afterwards we had composition which still isn’t my strong point as trying to work out stuff on keys for other instruments doesn’t feel right, I’d feel a lot better using my bass to come up with something a hell of a lot better than I am at the moment on a MIDI keyboard. So I need to improve massively because it doesn’t help my confidence going into this lesson and at the end of it having this 30 second piece of absolute tribe, which I do not feel like sharing to anyone as I know I could do better on the actual instruments.

We had to compose a 30 second piece based upon a mobile phone ringtone and well to be brutally honest nothing came to mind so I tried to come up with something that consisted with the following instruments, Bass, Cello, Drums and a Xylophone because I was feeling it. This didn’t go particularly well, but neither have any of my previous works so if I feel like I’m going down a downwards spiral I will be sure to tell Chris before I just spontaneously explode.

We then had a break which consists of the majority of the pack going to smoke, but with my select few we go sit down somewhere but going out side at this moment in time is like asking to become an ice cube willingly. When our venture had concluded we had Theory with Jason which consisted of us going through our stylistic Analysis work which I have essentially finished so I am just left to sit and tidy it all up which is alright I suppose.

Currently I am going through the songs we had touched upon and have dropped from our set to keep myself occupied and to display to the board that I am more than capable of assessing four different genres. When this is done all that is left to do is to ask Jason nicely to go through it and to ask if there is anywhere I can improve my work which will be fun to do.

After my incredible luncheon which consists of weekly sitting under the stairs and or in the Media corridor because eating in the music corridor is like a forbidden fruit, me and Tom exchange some fiery jokes whilst Reece and Jack talk amongst themselves which is epic.

During rehearsal for the first half I went through the set for the other band Chris has put me in for an extra challenge or push so to speak playing guitar which is enjoyable at times when things go to plan which I need to mention to Chris at some point to try help the band progress in a good way rather than the little giggles between the singer and drummer which is at the moment making me want to leave them to it as it seems to be the only thing on their minds.

When I came back in the room there was a special surprise and that was Chris standing there playing some tunes which he wanted us to learn for Wednesdays rehearsal slot which we had to book with Dan, so I will be sure to go over them briefly before trying to get some sleep tonight amongst my other work.

Then at the end of the day we had tutor which is always special fun times, today’s bulletin was about healthy eating which is a good reminder but by the end of a day on a Tuesday everybody is just asleep and or dying to leave which is fair enough.

Knowing what I need to work and improve upon, I went home laid everything out on my bed and tried to have a little nap but I couldn’t so fun awaits me.

Bohemian Rhapsody The Film

Bohemian Rhapsody is simply a celebration of Queen, their music and their extraordinary lead singer Freddie Mercury.

Freddie exceeded the stereotypes and shattered convention to become one of the most admired entertainers on the planet. The film explores the sudden rise of the band through their iconic songs and revolutionary sound.  They reach unparalleled success, but an unexpected turn struck Freddie to other darker influences, which led to him shunning Queen in pursuit of his solo career.

Having suffered enough without the collaboration of Queen, Freddie manages to reunite with his band mates just in time for Live Aid which was organised by Bob Geldof. While bravely facing a recent AIDS diagnosis, Freddie leads the band into one of the greatest performances in the history of rock music, especially for the band themselves.

To this day Queen cements a legacy that continues to inspire outsiders, dreamers and music lovers to this day through their music, performances and backstory.

The only problem I had with the film was the tameness of the script, whose narrative begins and ends with the Live Aid concert. To me its like the writer is uncertain about the details of Mercury’s relationships and lifestyle as a gay man,

But on the other hand they go ahead and re-imagine the timeline of his life, inserting a scene in which Mercury reveals to his band mates that he has contracted HIV ahead of Live Aid, two years before he was thought to have been diagnosed, in a grasping attempt to give the concert, and therefore the film, additional meaning which frustrated me massively after walking out of the cinema.

It would have made more sense for them to play Sun City before Live Aid, it would have made the film more authentic. But sticking with Live Aid made more sense for the nerves of the audience and wanting to blow the competition away.

Personally being a bit of a Queen fan myself for a solid 4 years, I keep it to myself though, here’s what I’ve been working on in that time.

I came away from the film thinking there was no cohesiveness to the sub plots. For example a bunch of  the scenes were thrown together with little bits for fans of the music. The first half was way too tame and long, the second half wasn’t as bad but they could have done way more to work on the loneliness, drugs, sex, homosexuality without going overboard, to me it was all kinda just suggested.

Yet again the movie represents Freddie Mercury as he would have wanted to be remembered, as a performer who made music, and respects him by not delving too deeply into his private life which is completely understandable and respectful.

The best thing I can say is Rami Malek’s performance totally saved this from being a straight to DVD release which I am thankful for as he is a great actor and has starred within one of my favourite series called “Mr Robot” I recommend you check it out on Amazon Prime.

This film could have been fantastic, however due to the script being so poorly written (honestly, some of the scenes are woeful) and stripped of any negativity of Queen. You’ll learn more by just reading this article.

Overall the film is highly enjoyable for fans of the music and the general public as a gateway or something along the same guidelines into the deep stories and meaning behind Queens true image and rise to fame!

Tuesday the 16th of October 2018

This morning we started off with a rehearsal with Jason which is always enjoyable for me at least, our singer wasn’t in today because of personal reasons which is completely understandable. This therefore led us on the act like professionals and to use the time given appropriately, Jason came in and helped us come up with lyrics for our original song we got pretty far with that and nearing the end of the session we packed up within preparation for our next class.

Composition was a blast as per usual we worked on another 30-second piece about ‘Happiness’ this time because everyone in my class is always happy 24/7 without a doubt.  My piece consisted of a brass section, a couple of basses cause that’s cool and drums, I tend to keep my head down during that session and work at my own special pace which seems to help me and not to worry considerably about it like I did when composing for GCSE as that was a burden.

After composition we had Stylistic Analysis with Jason which is always fun times, yet again I keep my head down and do my work whilst everyone gets on with what they’re doing I tend to ignore others as then I get off a task to which is not great. I finished up my analysis of ‘Mercy’ by Duffy and then proceeded to start my analysis of ‘Treasure’ by Bruno Mars which was fun as I get lost easy trying to think when others are around me so I asked Tom for some help for the next time we have the class with Jason for some of his notes to give me a hand.

When that lesson had finished we had lunch which went alright then we had rehearsal. We went through our set as per usual to the best of our abilities and talked about the original a bit, but it’s difficult to do, our singer was in but she didn’t feel like singing which is completely understandable. so we went through the set and now there are some worries with doing ‘Sex On Fire’ which is excellent so we left it like that to pick up on tomorrow.

Then we had a tutorial with Chris which is always special fun times, we went through our pro-portal thing and set our goals and what we are striving for, etc which is always nice to keep in mind, after tutor had finished I asked Jason if he could come and check my work so far which he agreed to do yet again which is very kind of him, then after that it was home time which is the best time.

Album of the week

Rattle That Lock – David Gilmour

It is the fourth solo studio album by Pink Floyd singer and guitarist David Gilmour.

It was originally released in September 2015, on the record label Columbia.

The genre of the album would be considered all of the three in which being Rock, Jazz and Ambient, and the album lasts for 51 minutes roughly!

Gilmour completed short tours around Europe in September and October 2015 and South America in December 2015 to support the album, with a similar tour of the United States and Canada following in March and April 2016.

During his short tour around Europe, as previously mentioned I saw him at the Royal Albert Hall which was amazing for my first ever live music event!

The artwork for the album was created by Dave Stansbie from The Creative Corporation under the direction of Aubrey Powell, who has worked with David Gilmour and Pink Floyd since the late 1960s!

By any Pink Floyd Fans standards, Rattle That Lock is definitely worth setting aside the time to listen to properly to experience its inner meaning.

With lyrics by his wife Polly Samson, who has had a massive influence upon this album, Gilmour reflects heavily on an aspect of time passing by and the urgency to live what’s left to the fullest, which explains the opening with his creeping-dawn guitar overture ‘5 A.M’.

And the morning-train glide of the title track. The flow of moods — the waltz ‘Faces of Stone’; the jazzy-youth memoir ‘The Girl in the Yellow Dress’ (with distant bleats of cornet by Robert Wyatt); the martial rock, ringed with light, of ‘Today’ — is striking and effective, recalling the hooks-and-choruses side of 1971’s Meddle by Pink Floyd.

One of my favourite tracks off of the album would have to be ‘A Boat Lies Waiting’ with sighing harmonies by David Crosby and Graham Nash, and a mumbled monologue similar to that on ‘The Great Gig in the sky’ – is dedicated to late keyboardist Richard Wright so this may be Gilmour’s own life on display summarised within a spectacular album.

But Gilmour is, inevitably, most eloquent here as a guitarist, if it wasn’t for his playing and musicianship I wouldn’t be here today at Fareham Music.

In the iconic arcs of silvery treble illuminating the instrumental of one of the final tracks ‘Beauty’, the guitarist sounds like an expressive master of his craft, one who hasn’t aged a day.

And on that note, I definitely recommend setting aside to experience this album in full if you’re a fan of David Gilmour and Pink Floyd, or into Rock and Jazz because it’s bloody brilliant all round!

More than one third of music consumers still pirate music

Despite rise of legal streaming, a substantial number of listeners still rip music from sites such as YouTube for offline listening.

More than one-third of global music listeners are still pirating music, according to a new report by the International Federation of the Phonographic Industry (IFPI). While the massive rise in legal streaming platforms such as Spotify, Apple Music and Tidal was thought to have stemmed illegal consumption, 38% of listeners still continue to acquire music through illegal means.

The most popular form of copyright infringement is stream-ripping (32%): using easily available software to record the audio from sites like YouTube at a low-quality bit rate. Downloads through “cyberlocker” file hosting services or P2P software like BitTorrent came second (23%), with acquisition via search engines in third place (17%).

Stream-rippers told the IFPI that their primary motive was being able to listen to music offline without paying for a premium subscription to the likes of Spotify and Apple Music, most legal subscription services I am aware of charge around £10 a month to listen without adverts.

The IFPI estimated that YouTube represented an annual revenue of less than 76p per user, compared to £15 on Spotify, and concluded that user upload services are not returning fair value to the music community.

David Price, the director of insight and analysis at IFPI said that very little stream-ripping was happening on streaming services such as Spotify and Apple Music, and that these services could do little more to attract people towards paying for subscriptions: “There is no better way of consuming music, full stop. It is very difficult to imagine how they could become more user-friendly.” He instead put the blame on “the large video platforms like YouTube” for not doing enough to prevent piracy.

“There are certain areas where they could improve on the security front, such as better encryption,” he said. Stream-ripping sites often involve simply entering a link from YouTube, with the sites then generating a free MP3 file from the link to illegally download. “There’s no way of giving sites a link from Spotify or Netflix and getting an immediate download, but you can do that for some of the large video platforms,” David Price explained.

“This is a game that is easy for a lot of these sites to play. It’s not like setting up a torrent site like the Pirate Bay, where you’ve got to collect all this content and curate it to some extent. You’re basically offering people access to music that is already uploaded elsewhere.

Thirty-five percent of listeners who do not use a paid-for streaming service said everything they want to listen to was on YouTube. This will change following the approval last month of Europe’s copyright directive, designed to update copyright legislation for the digital ageArticle 13, of the legislation makes social media platforms responsible for the prevention of users sharing copyrighted material.

The IFPI surveyed a representative sample of 16 – to 64-year-olds in 18 countries, including the UK, South Korea, France, the US, Brazil and South Africa, who make up the vast majority of global music consumption.
