Thursday the 7th of November 2019, Solent University

I went on a trip to Solent University with my year group today, and it was a pretty cool insight to how this particular UNI operates.

The trip is a way in which we could meet the lecturers at Solent and record one of our songs from our set for the upcoming Christmas Showcase and due to the fact that we will soon be competing to perform at Solent Sound, a competition for young musicians hosted by Solent University, thats if we get voted through of course, but I have high hopes when it comes to it as I know if we put our heads down and worked hard we could win it for our college and ourselves.

I payed the drummer from my band for a lift there and back to Southampton which was convenient for me, but the traffic getting there was awful not to mention my navigational skills from the back of the car.

When we finally had arrived we briskly walked over to Solent University, the building that we went into was fairly new and its facilities to me were very impressive considering I have not yet looked round any Universities yet.not just in the music department but the building as a whole.

When we arrived in the music department, after many flights of stairs, we were separated into our bands and each band was sent into a rehearsal room with a lecturer from the university. We played our chosen song ‘Love Rears Its Ugly Head’ by Living Colour so that the lecturer could hear what we sounded like as a band without his critique.

He then worked with each of us in order to improve our sound. For me, he focussed on helping my guitar part have a more “ rock” sound, encouraging me to really bring out the sound within my guitar by properly hitting it so my strings were to resonate more and then the body would come out more.

Another area he touched upon was me focussing heavily on my fretboard, so he then told me to stare either at the audience and or too my band and perform it to them every time, even when I’m soloing because my muscle memory is there.

One of the last major things I will talk about is my use of dynamics, I was told to try without palming muting myself when the singer is singer and do what I want because guitar is one of the huge elements to this song along with the drums.

After working with the lecturers, because they all came in and out after they had heard that a band were covering a Living Colour song, and then running through the song a few more times, we were moved into a studio to record our track which was exciting and frustrating as you never know how many takes you’ll need before it peaks a standard you are all happy with.

Although I am now quite used to recording by now, it was still a fun experience as the studio was very open so that we couple see each other. We were also limited with time, which meant that none of our recordings were perfect except the final take where we all cracked down and gave it our all after all the hiccups we had previously experienced, but we might be able to edit them once we get back to college as we were given the tracks back.

The trip was a overall good experience and it was interesting to see what the music facilities at Solent are like, but all in all this is just giving us all a look at what further education may have installed for us.

Easter Live Lounge Performance, Tuesday the 26th of March 2019

My band The Preachers performed at the Ashcroft Arts Centre upon Tuesday the 26th of March as part of the Fareham College Easter Showcase.

Along with many other inferior bands, we performed our tribute to the iconic album ‘Purple Rain’ by Prince and The Revolution, which I have personally grown to love. I turned up in full costume which was something special, we definitely stood out amongst a crowd of normally dressed people. We were flamboyant to say the least.

The gig was epic, I was brought chocolate and pizza afterwards from my partner for doing such a good job. During our performance, the crowd seemed to be enjoying themselves and singing along when I trying to scope out Chris hidden all the way at the back. Afterwards we were praised big time from both the audience and our lecturers. I felt like it went really well and I was proud of how confident I have became leading up to that very moment.

Our playing was spot on, and so was our presentation, now I own a full on Prince costume to whip out whenever…

However, no one is perfect unless you’re in my band, but we didn’t play throughout the whole set without a slip up or two. The worst trip would have been right after our drummer tripped up a bit during the drum solo.

The beginning of the guitar solo, our bassist struggled counting the bars whilst trying to engage with the audience and our singer at the same time. This has gone well in rehearsal may I add, but on the night he fell behind by half a bar at the start on the guitar solo. I instantly noticed and instantly turned away from the crowd and straight to our drummer, because I know she is the keeper of time itself. We held onto the original bar for a short while but our bassist still hadn’t noticed, so we both halted to go back to him.

This change happened quite simultaneously, and I’m fairly certain nobody else noticed apart from each other afterwards. Not only am I proud of each and every member of my band but I am proud of everyone who took part that evening an for how well we all played whilst representing our College.

I have linked our performance below if you would like to check it out!

Mastodon, Kvelertak and Mutoid Man, O2 Guildhall Southampton, Thursday the 17th of January 2019

What can I say to start off this by saying, I have probably inflicted tinnitus.

I chose not to film and or take photos for one as I’m lazy, two I was with my partner and it felt awkward to look like a huge nerd for one of the support acts..

Mutoid Man were entertaining for a band I have heard very little about, pretty heavy so I instantly rate that. Banging tone for a three piece of Bass, Guitar and Drums. My favourite aspect was the guitarist and bassist flipping each other when they took breaks from soloing or playing, that made it so much better.

Kvelertak, Mmmm one of my favourite bands, do I understand a word of what they’re saying, no, but do I enjoy it? Clearly you losers. They’re a Norwegian heavy metal band from Stavanger, they have a new lead singer, prefer their old one as he looked like a embodiment of Normandy, well to me..

Each guitarist broke a string each throughout their set, that’s one of my personal goals to achieve that much chaos.

Turns out someone filmed parts of the gig, so if you want to check out how brutal they were be my guest, but just to let you know I enjoyed every second of it.

At the end of every set they play their self titled song whilst the singer waves a flag it’s the best thing ever.

The men of the hour, Mastodon, solid 10/10 for the meaty riffs and thickkk tone. I completely forgot that they were bringing on Scott Kelly from ‘Neurosis’ so that was like bonus for more yelling!

They played all their hit tracks and a few off their new EP called ‘Toe to Toes’ which is definitely worth sitting down and listening to.

They finished off the evening with ‘Blood and Thunder’ the most brutal thing I’ve been a part of live..

Thee Sultan Sheiks at The Fawcett Inn, Friday the 23rd November 2018

Only a few words can describe how I enjoyed my Friday evening.

Jason kindly went ahead and asked the manager of the pub he was playing in if I was allowed to come and see them.

Considering I am on a Music course I’m trying to become more involved within what is going on around my area. Jason introduced me to the many cover bands he plays within a while back, since then I have kept a close eye on ‘Thee Sultan Sheiks’.

Now you maybe thinking why on God’s green earth would a 16 year old be interested within a cover band, and too be honest with you I don’t actually know.

I’ve gone to the extent of buying a few T-shirts which me and two others now have within our possession which is a great conversation starter, they’re also solid promotion for the band too.

You can watch countless videos on their YouTube channel of live performances and a handful of Christmas Specials which make me laugh.

From my musicians perspective it was impressive on how they fit a five piece band within such a small space which took me by surprise.

They are a very tight band, they had decent chops, quality banter, and a excellent vocal range between them all. Each member had there own personality but an end goal of entertaining the audience which is good to see. I’m not their target audience I’m well aware of and yes I did feel out of place but it was worth it and I’ll be definitely seeing them again in the future.

Thank you Jason!
