Solent Sound, Battle of the bands, Wednesday the 4th of March 2020

Yesterday, we were part of the semi-final for the Solent Sound Competition and it was a battle of the bands based thing. All three bands of the bands from my year group competed for the audience’s votes which were crucial when it came to what band progressed to the next stage. We each had to perform three songs, as a band we played‘Don’t Start Now’ by Dua Lipa, ‘Purple Rain’ by Prince, and ‘Juice’ by Lizzo.

Leading up to this event we have been working with dancers, which is was a strange addition to myself in the first place but I guess it works, we are taking inspiration from Lizzo, she has dancers with her when she performs live and each song has its own choreography. The video we did with them for promotional purposes for the college went incredibly well because of how many times we went over it, but when it came to the dance for ‘Don’t Start Now’ it fell to pieces when the new dancer was introduced to our set list. She was a bit late when it came to learning this routine I’d say.

We went ahead with the set and the dancers regardless, I hoped that the music would be a uplift it needed to take the attention away from them for the one song. After getting feedback from the audience and our lecture it seemed as though that they definitely added to the performance but it took away the traction from the band and the music.

Whenever I looked up I would have someones bottom in my face and it was something special especially when I tried to keep a poker face on when I play in front of any audience, all I focus on is looking cool and sounding better than everybody else.

Up until this point we have been rehearsing as a band with our keys player, primarily focussing on our new tracks. But with ‘Purple Rain’ we have been playing this song since the start of the second year which is quite along time to me. We couldn’t be any tighter when playing this song, because we now know all of its ins and outs. This was the first time we performed live with our keys player and he has definitely added something to when we play texturally which helps all of the songs we choose to play.

Our first song was ‘Don’t Start Now’ which is a laid back bass driven track, it is the first thing that makes any listeners ears perk up as it is very dominant amongst all of the other instruments within this arrangement. Onstage the bass amp decided to play up but the audience could hear it perfectly so it was a bit hard to keep in time as it was incredibly confusing.

We somehow managed to get through it in the end and the audience enjoyed it regardless as the dancers drew some of the attention away from the bands confusion. Now that we sussed out the problem was the onstage sound we carried on until the next song which was ‘Purple Rain’.

This song is always a crowd pleaser, our vocalist gets to show off her capabilities and so do I which is fun, when we go through it within rehearsal it does get a bit boring due to repetition… I extended my solo to repeat a section again which rounds it all off and eventually brings the song to a close. The synth behind me whilst soloing gives me confidence as it doesn’t sound too empty which is a big bonus, having a keys player is very beneficial.

Our final song was called ‘Juice’ by Lizzo, this is a song we are all confident on as it revolves around a simple progression with a simple, fun and funky groove which makes anyone want to dance around and be playful. We kept it till last for many reasons, one of which is because it is the strongest wrong for the dancers and it is a way to end it on a high note which is something we’d hope get us more votes than we did.

After the final count it turned out that we did not get enough votes to allow our band to progress further within the competition which didn’t bother me as I now don’t have to worry about all the extra rehearsal when I have enough on my plate already. The Fever won, and they primarily played Rock which is fairly popular as it is a very common thing for most bands to play, because it is easy to play loud and stick to simple riffs… There stage presence was definitely there but at times I thought it was a bit over the top, and the singer was straining her self and you could see it was hurting her to be so loud, etc. I wish them luck within their journey to the final event.

Warm Up Christmas Gig, Wednesday the 20th of November 2019

On Wednesday the 20th of November 2019 we performed a Christmas warm up to demonstrate our abilities so far during this academic year. The two songs we played are our strongest at the moment, so we all felt more than confident when it came to playing them.

The first song we played was ‘I’d Rather Go Blind’ by Etta James, but we played a version covered by a band called Stan Webbs Chicken Shack. Within this track my part revolves around two chords so there is nothing particularly challenging so it is a relaxing 5 minutes for me. The only bit that requires full focus is when I have to improvise a solo but then it goes back to the chords, this song is especially for the singer.

We have all learnt that most audiences when it comes to listening to music, they mainly focus upon how the singer looks and sounds, as long as we are there to support and fill in the blank space behind her. What I need to improve on within this song is looking more engaged with my part which is something I can do in my spare time and just trying to smile more especially at the crowd.

Thee next song we played is called ‘Love Rears Its Ugly Head’ by Living Colour, this was a particularly tricky one for us all to get our heads around in such a short amount of time but the best songs for us always turn out to be the most challenging and time consuming!

Our drummer learnt her part for this song by reading sheet then memorising it that way, I did the majority of the song by ear as you can’t trust what is online for music for the most part so I had to be very precise and make sure I wasn’t half asking it. After two weeks or so I had gotten my bit down including the solos, it was then up to me building my confidence up playing within a band then in front of an audience and you can see the outcome in the video.

For this admittedly as a band we definitely need to get tighter for this song to sound crisp rather than a sloppy mess in certain areas, to do this we will make the most of our rehearsal sessions and go through the song in greater detail rather than going through our entire set and avoiding the task at hand.

On my hand I need to perform and show off to the audience when I go for a solo because that is its soul purpose in all so there is no reason as to why I shouldn’t be sucking up the spotlight for once instead of the singer…

A final issue to mention is looking down upon my fretboard, I know I can play the songs without intensely observing it as it is just a coping mechanism for me as sometimes my inner shy guy comes out and I try to focus more upon myself rather than the audience so I feel more confident but from now on this will change and I will try to leap out of my comfort zone like an adult.

Easter Live Lounge Performance, Tuesday the 26th of March 2019

My band The Preachers performed at the Ashcroft Arts Centre upon Tuesday the 26th of March as part of the Fareham College Easter Showcase.

Along with many other inferior bands, we performed our tribute to the iconic album ‘Purple Rain’ by Prince and The Revolution, which I have personally grown to love. I turned up in full costume which was something special, we definitely stood out amongst a crowd of normally dressed people. We were flamboyant to say the least.

The gig was epic, I was brought chocolate and pizza afterwards from my partner for doing such a good job. During our performance, the crowd seemed to be enjoying themselves and singing along when I trying to scope out Chris hidden all the way at the back. Afterwards we were praised big time from both the audience and our lecturers. I felt like it went really well and I was proud of how confident I have became leading up to that very moment.

Our playing was spot on, and so was our presentation, now I own a full on Prince costume to whip out whenever…

However, no one is perfect unless you’re in my band, but we didn’t play throughout the whole set without a slip up or two. The worst trip would have been right after our drummer tripped up a bit during the drum solo.

The beginning of the guitar solo, our bassist struggled counting the bars whilst trying to engage with the audience and our singer at the same time. This has gone well in rehearsal may I add, but on the night he fell behind by half a bar at the start on the guitar solo. I instantly noticed and instantly turned away from the crowd and straight to our drummer, because I know she is the keeper of time itself. We held onto the original bar for a short while but our bassist still hadn’t noticed, so we both halted to go back to him.

This change happened quite simultaneously, and I’m fairly certain nobody else noticed apart from each other afterwards. Not only am I proud of each and every member of my band but I am proud of everyone who took part that evening an for how well we all played whilst representing our College.

I have linked our performance below if you would like to check it out!
